Emergency Site Redesign!

Google sent me a little spring bonus of its own yesterday. There's a new rule about how to place ads that has been implemented to prevent accidental clicks even further. It's pretty drastic and basically I have to re-design the entire site.

Also, you're probably wondering what's happening to those new site features. They're on the way and they're super awesome! :D
We're getting very close to sending it out to the testers, but it'll be another week or two.

Both of those mean an opportunity/necessity to overhaul the site.
What needs to go?
What needs to be added?
Post links of any/all sites that you like and tell me what you like about them (not just dress up sites.. any sites that have well designed features).
Let's brain storm! =D

*******************************************
EDIT: What do you think about this:

  1. I think you should somehow keep the colour theme and the flower theme in your site... I think it's very pretty and the colours are nicely calm! Sorry I'm not very helpful!

  2. What about a poll? You could write a list of your FAVOURITE ideas that you have for games and people could vote on which one gets made first. :) Or what about a comment feature where you can comment on the games themselves or maybe a review feature? When I play dollmakers/dressups I often review them in my head and come up with ways to make the game better. And a five-star rating system on the games would be pretty cool too. ^-^ And what about doing more musical dress up games like the Fairytale and Rock Chic maker? You have really good taste in music. (especially if you happen to like Adele as she's AMAZING!!!)

As for what anon said, go for any colour scheme you like. I myself like the current one but I wouldn't mind if you decided to re-design completely in the future. I used to have a blog and I had it all purple at first and then it was white with purple doodles on the background then I went for a rainbow theme. ^-^

And what about the idea of making it a 'log in' site. Non-members could still play the games but members could create their own profile and have their own little gallery of saved dolls and maybe a small fourm. Now THAT would be cool! And I like how the Nyan game is different to your usual stuff, it broadons your horisons (and mine as this is one of the few sites I use practically everyday) maybe submitting more games like that would be worthwhile?

  3. http://www.zeldanime.com/

This is one of the best sites that I have come across. ^.^

  4. A place where people can upload their styles help a lot to see how they play and what everyone prefers in games etc :D I think that would be really cool!!!And i agree with anon and Jessamine with the layout color and flowery design!
Maybe an extra "play a random game"? its kind of fun :D

  5. I like the idea of people being able to have their own profile and gallery. I save all my dolls but every time I have a computer crisis I lose a lot of them. I understand that would probably be a big step though.
Jessamine also has a point about the review option. My friends and I were talking about that the other day.

  6. In the angel maker, can you make it so when you use the dress with the sweetheart neckline the underwear goes away? It doesn't look as good when the feathery things are sticking out. Great game!

  7. I'd like to be able to rate games or at least see which ones are the most played. This way 1) I could find good games really fast and 2) you could see which ones are the most popular, which could probably end up being helpful.

To add to that, being able to sort games in different ways in the categories would be nice. If there ends up being a comment feature, it could be like sort alphabetically, by plays, by comments, by rating, etc. It would end up making finding a good game to play easier or at least be a good way to find a new one.

That said, I can't really think of anything in particular layout wise that I would like. I do think that maybe a new color scheme would be nice, though. If you're gonna do something new, might as well make it REALLY new, right? I do like the pinks, though, if you want to keep them.

  8. Meh. Google is SUCH a picky advertiser. Good luck on the redo and take as long as you need.

  9. In the Angel Maker Game, what if you added one of those halos that are in cartoons. Just a suggestion.

  10. Maybe some more male dress up games? I see some good ones and some bad ones, but the ones you have are the best I've seen! That and there aren't too many of them.

For some reason I'm picturing a male neko dress up. weird....

  11. I really like the idea of a 'random game' button, I love all your games so much I don't want to have to pick one! :P

  12. The new design is gonna look way cool!

  13. I just now noticed that in the Hogwarts couple creator, the guy has six (that's right 6 ) toes!

  14. Oh geez, you're right! >_<

  15. I would love an avatar-like feature where the character you design is who you interact through the site with. Bigger and better process screens of the work-in-progress games. An annual contest where a lucky winner is chosen to pick the theme of the next game. 'Copy&Paste' Links to advertise the site better. PLREASE MAKE A FINAL FANTASY GAME! preferably characters from games 6 through 13. It's one of the most amazing video games ever, and a doll maker inspired by the characters would be AMAZING!

  16. I like the logo lettering to be more wavey/curly because it seems to fit in my opinion. It gives it an airy feeling or like clothe material. Hard to explain, apart from that the rest looks great. Your current lay out has a majestic victorian feel to it, and I hope your new layout does not lose the majectic feel of it, nomater of the theme. Hope this helped. Love the new angel maker! It is so beautiful. =)

  17. Love the new layout design!!

The website: zeldanime.com that I mentioned earlier may be a good example of what everyone is wanting. :) Check it out! :D

  18. I checked out the Zeldanime site, It's cool.

  19. A random game button would be AWESOME!!! Cus I've played your games sooo much I don't know which one to chose! lol! Love the new Angel Maker!! :)

  20. Sorry to an Anon, I had to delete a comment that was potentially hurtful ~

Ok so what in particular do you like about zeldanime.com? :)
There's a lot there to take in...

  21. The polls, forum, and really the general layout of the site.
They have everything neat and organized where if one was to go and immeadiatly want to find something they could.
Also theres the whole commenting thing.
You could do your blog on the site rather than having a seperate window pop up and people who don't nessacarily read the comment may be more interested to comment on it that way.
Just some stuff that comes off the brain, may think of more. lol

p.s: they also have the whole everyone has somekind of avatar for the forum and stuff so that you can tell/remember who the commentor is.

  22. I love the preview image! The butterflies and the pink/yellow combination are lovely.
In unhelpful response to some of the other suggested features: I really like the simplicity of DollDivine in comparison to other sites. No accounts or message boards or rating competitions... It's very clean. I think that adding avatars and other 'social site' type features would bog down the site.
Just my two cents, though! I look forward to seeing the renovations, even if they are on short notice. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would love features that give better ideas of what new games are being worked on, what kinds of games are being considered, and so on.

The idea of having registered accounts and personal profiles/galleries to save one's dolls would also be fantastic. Going off of that, perhaps there could be contests where you give a limitation or requirement (what maker to use, a color theme, doing a cosplay, etc) and have visitors vote for which one they think is best. The winner could be allowed to choose the theme for the next game, like Anonymous suggested.

Finally, like siobahan suggested, more male makers would be nice. Your dollmakers are the best, and I love using them to make images of the characters I like to write about (it helps me get a picture of them in my head ^^), and I have a hard time finding good ones for guys!

  24. I have to say I'm not too keen on that new design, but that's just a personal thing that I can't pinpoint at all. As far as websites that I think are really well designed, the best has to be www.graze.com - my friends who are either studying computer-oriented subjects at uni or work in web design are all wowed by it. Not dress up, not even remotely close, but it is a fantastic site.

www.tealeavesandcoffee.co.uk is another really well designed site, it's a shop, not a dress-up site, but for me it's just nice to look at and easy to use.

  25. I really like the way that http://www.lunaii-dollmaker.com/ is laid out. It's actually a bit similar to DollDivine, in some ways, now I think about it...

  28. Yay! I'm so happy right now! Yesterday the Blogger stuff that allows you to post a comment was shut down yesterday, so I coundn't post comments!:(

But I'm happy it's up and running again!

Enough about my problems, I love, love, love, your new idea for the site!!!

  29. When will the Sailor Senshi Additional Items be finished?

    ReplyDelete
  30. So I seriously had a lovely, LONG post written the last time this post was up, but then Blogger went insane and wouldn't let me comment, then the post disappeared. Ah well. I'll just summarize it.

I don't like the idea of making the website community driven, with comments sections and profiles and avatars you interact with. That is something entirely different from this website's point, and to be frank I'd probably visit much less if all of that was cluttering it up. If people want a highly involved community, might I suggest a forum like the one over at Lunaii? It's fully separate from the main site, and has a strong community of frequent posters, complete with contests and "doll dumps."

I also don't like the idea of a ratings system. I feel like, on a site on which there wasn't as much quality control, such a feature would be pretty important. But the games you post are already so far beyond most games that a ratings system would only land an otherwise amazing game with a lower rating than it deserves, by virtue of a fact that another game is slightly better. Also, if a new visitor saw that a game had a low rating, they might decide to NOT play it, even though it would otherwise be a game they would really enjoy.

In terms of websites I like:
    Lunaii
I love that she has each type of game in a separate section. If you're planning to "branch out" and include more games like the Nyan Cat one, if might be nice if they had a section separate from the dollmakers, and then within the dollmaker section you could have subdivisions.

    Your current layout
Honestly, when someone else asked me for examples of good layout, yours was one I mentioned. Your website isn't cluttered feeling, and it's easy to find what you're looking for

  31. Hi Ola! How are you? Havin' a fun time at work?
I bet you've been so busy with game ideas and designs, that you're ready for a vacation.

  32. Hi Kate! It does stink that because of the Blogger stuff, all the comments posted disappeared. I posted alot of things on there, and honestly, I don't remember half of them.

  33. Hey, everybody! Guess what? Go on, guess. OK, I'll tell you! The guy in the Hogwarts Couple Creator has six, ( that's right, 6)toes!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah what was up with Blogger yesterday? >_<

Sailor Senshi status is as posted on the Future Games page: "Estimated Date: Unknown" :)
I've learned not to make promises lol.

Kate, thanks! Great post! You bring up some good points. However, what I've got coming up is gonna be pretty cool. It's not quite like anything else out there. Also, I'm gonna structure it so that for those who aren't interested in signing up, there really won't be much of a difference in navigating the site.

Anonymous, I'm definitely busy but I would feel too guilty to take a vacation at this point! Plus, this is my idea of "fun" anyways ^_^ But hopefully after all this new stuff is sorted out... I'd like to do a road trip into the mountains perhaps.

  38. Right, I totally forgot: Could you make a list of every game suggested? The start of course would take some time, but with every request you get you could just add it, and we could stop requesting the games that have already be requested. That could very well save you some time:) You could also add wether or not you want to make it, but that is ofcours no neccesity:)

I had the idea before, but I remembered it because of Emerald Activities: http://www.emeraldactivities.com/index.php/topic,181.0.html

It's a whole list, but it does stop people from suggesting the same thing over and over again, especially if you decided not to make it:)
