Props go to my sister for suggesting a tiara. I got to sketching and came up with that thingy in the picture.
So yeah.. day 3 in the design trenches. Got the background, logo, colour scheme. Now it's just about the layout. Where to place ads? Where to place navigational tools? Where to place login buttons?
YES I'm going to have a Random Game button... So don't worry ^_^
At this point I need feedback of that sort...

So perdy! :3 Site navigation right now I find an itty bitty bit confusing, mostly because sometimes when I'm looking for a game I'm not sure what category it would fall under. I don't know what you could do to help with that though, it's mostly just me being confused, as always. :P But you could maybe put in a game search bar thingy? The adds don't bother me much, I barely notice them most of the time. I actually had to go looking around the site to see where they were. :P And I go on the site to find new games most of the time, but I also play the old games when I'm looking for inspiration or bored or feel nostalgic or something. :3

Hmm, for me it would be easier to find games in order of appearence, if you get what I mean:P I am somehow still used to the way the used to be organised: the eldest games at the end, the newest upfront:P But ofcourse that is confusing to new players.
ReplyDeleteI did had trouble finding the Muchagame at first, because it was under the 'sponserd games', and it had been in the part where you announce new games. In that part you usually only put the games that you helped working on, so I was confused.
I can always find everything else, so the categories are fine by me:) But it could never hurt to have a searchoption:)
PS: I do miss the flowers in your logo... Can anyone guess why?:P

ReplyDeleteI don't find your current layout difficult to navigate. Although, that might just be because I spend so much time on the site that I know exactly where all my favorites are.
I think the current categories are good. Every now-and-then, after a game gets bumped from the newest dolls area, I have a moment where I wonder "which category would that be in?" but most of the time it's not a problem.
In terms of "what I go to your site for," I'd say all three. I usually visit to see if there are any new games, and if there aren't I end up laying my old favorites.
I think my main suggestions would be to give the male dressup games their own category so they'd be a little easier to find, and maybe have a separate page for the "Our Friends" links and any other websites you'd like to recommend.
I love the site! Everything about it is really easy to navigate, and I like that you've got an 'upcoming games' section. I always come on looking to see if you've got any new games, and I'm especially looking forward to when you finish the Tudours and the Viking dress up.

ReplyDeletePost Hijack: I was wondering how extensive the tudors dressup game was going to be? I remember either you or Azalea saying that you were rewatching the whole series for outfits. I mean I can already tell it's probably going to be a pretty big game because you can customize males and females (at least that's the impression that I got).
ReplyDeleteBut I was wondering how much detail are you going to go into? Are you going to include every famel outfit, hairstyle and head-dress? Will their be the same detail work, will the dresses be very customizable or just a little customizable or come in different colours. I already know that the shapes of certain dresses can obviously just have a quick colour change and voila it's a differnt dress. I just feel like this is a HUGE project, there's so much detail in the tudors and so many wonderful outfits and hairstyles and actors/actresses and whatnot that I was hoping you could at least give us an idea what this game will be like.
I don't mind how long it'll take, I'm excited for it no matter what. I just loved the series and thus have a lot of curiousity about how you're doing the game.

Again, better than most sites. Most sites just have 'New Games' and 'Popular' and stuff like that. Though I used the Adventurer maker yesterday and I was confused as to why it was in 'historical'.
Maybe add a 'groups' catogory too, for dress-ups and makers where you can dress up more than one person. (eg Hogwarts Couples)
How can I make it easier for you to find the game you want?

I mostly go there to play the games, maybe check if the new ones are ready. I like to re-create my characters on dress-up games and yours and Azalea's are the only games I have found in which I can do that as there is so much choice.

I hate the ads inside the games, especially if they talk because it always freaks me out when I have several tabs open for different games and one suddenly starts talking, then I have to search through the tabs and close it to stop the noise. XD I can live with it, but it does freak me out.

As for placement, I think the log-in button should be fairly near the top so it's not in your face, so to speak, if you're not a member.
Also, slightly un-related note but you should keep your old little catchphrase thingy, 'the most beautiful dress up dolls online'. Why? Because it's true! ^-^

ReplyDeleteNavigation is fairly easy on your site, but sometimes I don't know what category the game I want to play falls under.
As for the adds, they don't bother me at all. Well what I should say is that they don't bother me as long as they aren't really flashy or talky or whatever. :P
I always check in on Doll Divine when I get on the computer; it's one of the first five sites I go on. I love the surprise of new games, but the older games are fun too.
ALSO, this has nothing to do with the new layout or anything, just selfish reasoning. If you were looking for ideas for games, Lord of the Rings. Just....that would be so epic.

Actually, people can customize their Google search bar so that it shows diff things, for example results from the entire internet, which can be useless. I have it set to only search my site though! It works pretty well.

"I'm a High-School Drama Teacher and every year we do a unit where you create your own fantasy character with no restrictions on what you can create, and then the students create their own costumes and put on a play with their original characters. I've gotten fairies, elves, ogres, and everything in-between. Last year some students came up to me with their character designs and they had made them with doll makers from your website. Ever since then when I do this unit, I've been telling my students to go to your website for inspiration and help to design their characters.They all seem to think that it's really cool and pretty much amazing, and they wanted me to send this to you with suggestions.
1: For some odd reason, one of my students thinks you should do a maternity dress up game.

Also, as for what Ms. Schnurpel said about a Maternity Dress Up I can understand why one of her students would like it as a writer myself I know that at one point or other one of your characters is going to be up the duff. =-)

ReplyDeleteYeah, I doubt I'd do a maternity themed dressup, but I could see the advantage of having it often as an additional option for regular games... like the way you can add it to Katara in the Scene Maker.
I think you should add the Centaur maker and other half-animal makers, like the Anthro, to the Animal maker page. As for the page, it looks good.

Yeah, I know, really constructive feedback, lol. I like the way the site is set up now, with the games divided into different categories. It looks all neat and organized!

What I like about this site is that you don't use categories like 'most popular', which I find are not very useful when I want to find something. Since you put games in more than one category it's not that hard to find a game. I suggest that maybe you could put in a 'view from newest to oldest' option?

Back to the new site, maybe it's a tad too pink? I actually really like the current pink/grey combination. So much pinky pink makes me feel like I don't wear enough girly girl stuff to visit this site :D. I agree with Jessamine Diane, the catchphrase should stay, it's just not the same without it.

What about the same layout in a varity of different colours and if you're a member (which most/all of us here will be) can choice which colour they want because some people might like the pink where others may think it's too girly and some might not like purple/blue/orange/whatever. =-)

I like the site at it's current state. It's easily navigateable. The new layout is not to my taste, to be honest. A little too pink. But that's my opinion, and really, it's up to you, Ola.
ReplyDeleteI waay prefer the fancier type (font) that the words 'Doll Divine' are in currently, rather than the blockier type in the prototype, and I definitely agree that you should keep the little slogan, "The most beautiful dress up dolls online." The logo is awesome though!

I am saying so because there's this character from a series that I was trying to re-create using your dress up games, and she is an old woman.
I also believe even when you get white hair, you can still be beautiful. ;)

Many people have requested a God/Goddess maker. But the thing is, the often said 'Greek' God/Goddess maker. And that's just a bunch of toga's. It would be awesome if you could combine elements of Gods and Goddesses of the entire world. Like the trident from Poseidon with the horns of Hathor and the cats od Freya! But that would be a HUGE game. That would probably be bigger then the 4-elementsgame...

ReplyDelete@Ayra2: Yep, me too. I am addicted to it since I first found this site, a year or two ago. Ola had only five games or so, back then. The fairy, the mermaid, the elf, the warrior and the snowfairy, I believe. Then came the pirate and the centaur, and then the blog game.

I think that there should be a favorites button so you can find all the ones that you like without having to go anywhere else. That's just me, though. ;) I also think there should be more advanced genetics so you can change expressions as well as more colors for EVERYTHING.

ReplyDeleteDeviantArt does not cost anything to sign up, unless of course you would want to pay for a premium membership. It's handy if you want to keep tabs on certain artists, or like particular 'groups' of art (for example, there are a TON of Avatar TLA-related art groups on the dA), plus you can get feedback from other artists on your work. I've had one since I was 13 or so, and while I've gotten away from drawing I still regularly follow other artists' work (like OLa!)

Ehm, yeah, @Im2awesome, you weren't really sharing ideas, were you? Nor were Eyerock and Jin after 5:36 PM on May 29. The anon of 8:19 was expressing ideas, and I am pretty sure that the second anon didn't mean to comment on her, but that she was commenting on the people that want to make 150 comments.

If Ola is okay with it, I'll just accept it, but remember that she has to go through all those comments and that takes a lot of time.
So I hope you will refrain from posting things just to hit the 150. If you have ideas for the site, feel free to post them, and feel free to show your enthousiams for dolldivine, that is ofcourse no problem, but don't post anything that doesn't really have anything to do with the site, like "yeah, let's hit the 150".

@Im2awesome's question of what are we supposed to do when Ola isn't posting? There are plenty of things to do, playing outside, handing out with your friends, other websites or other games, dress-up or otherwise. Not trying to be rude but that was a very silly question.

Posting about how you want to get to 150 comments or when your summer vacation starts or how bored you are, are the type of questions that are what people are saying are annoying. We're all patiently waiting for Ola's next post, but filling up the blog with fodder to keep you busy is bothersome, and as the anon above said, it's not the place for it.

ReplyDelete@The anon who called me a know-it-all first: please read a response at a whole before you post about it. I said I think it is fine to express enthousiasm for the site (like: I am excited for new games) and to post ideas. Actually, I am all for that. What I don't like are comments JUST to hit the 150. I have seen that on this blog before, and it annoyed me. They were like "I am the 130th." "No, you are the 129th, I am the 130th" and that sort of rubbish. I know it's meant to be funny and all, but I just don't think it is.
The reason why I don't like them:
I got to the blog and there it says: "x amount comments" When that is higher then the last time I checked, I get excited: someone might have a good idea (which I find always interesting to read) or even better: Ola might have posted. But I always get (I know I shouldn't but I can't help it) a little disappointed when I find that the new comments aren't like that.
What I don't mind on the other hand, were the interesting debatse (I believe under the same blog) we had about Harry Potter and other things.
But let's all just stop this argument, I have said what I want to said, and I believe you have said what you want to say, so let's go back to what we did before the 120 comments: enjoy Dolldivine, post ideas, say how much we love the site and Ola for making it, and wait for Ola to give us an update.

I think I know why she hasn't been posting, I saw on the Doll Divine facebook that google has a new rule about flash game websites, and now OLa has to redesign it completely (she already was, but now she HAS to do it) so we may have to wait a bit. :(

ReplyDeleteSome things I really like about how the site looks right now is the pictures for the categories of the dress-ups. I think they give a nice preview, and they're big and eye catching.

ReplyDeleteShe probably gets an email for each comment. Even if she doesn't, if I was her, I wouldn't mind people having conversations or whatever, but just posting numbers seems pretty pointless. Getting 200 comments of numbers isn't nearly as good as getting 50 with substance. Of course, she's too nice to say anything about it herself when she gets a chance, but I think if you want to get to 200 or 300 comments you should try and do something with those comments.

TBH I don't think there's nowt wrong with what I posted. It's been done in the past and if Ola had a problem with it then she would have told us so. You can't say that she has a problem with it because that is putting words in her mouth. Yeah, she may have a problem with it, but again she might not. TBH I think it's YOU who has the problem with my posts. Yeah, they're useless but they're just a bit of fun. It's not like I'm coming on here flaming and trolling you all and I think you'll find that I have made some pretty good, valid comments in the past.
On an unrelated note, does anyone know what's up with Blogger? I can log it but for some reason the comment box doesn't register that I have done so. I don't now if this is happening for anyone else....
And also, Ola, sorry about all this crap that's going on. =-/

ReplyDeleteI was just wondering what your opinions are? I mean just look at Ola's announcement of why she hasn't made anything new recently. There were a few comments of people under that who were like 'but why aren't there any more games coming out anymore?' And it happens occasionally here that people can get rude or fail to read something but I feel like on facebook they sound a lot more rude and it happens at lot mroe often, at least to me.
Such as, when someone here suggests an idea for a game, most of the time it doesn't seem like a command or the poster doesn't act as if they actually have any athority over whether it gets made or not, they're just making a suggestion. But on facebook people make votes for what games they want her to make, as if she's going to make a game that maybe three people like (she may make them I know she does have a list..., I just think that people end up asking for some pretty obscure games that would be hard to turn into a dress up (Maximum ride in examplar, I read those books and there's nothing dress-up gamey about them other than the kids have wings) or have a very limited fanbase to begin with( also maximum ride)) or people ask her to make a game rudely, once I read a comment that was 'make a blah blah game, k bye.'
It just came across as so rude to me to talk that way about someone who takes their time to make something and she can't even ask nicely. Bah maybe it's just me being a hunbug but reading the comments on facebook inevitably make me frustrated at people's inability to read or inconsiderate attitudes.

ReplyDeleteThis is totally random and doesn't relate at all to the site redesign or anything, but when you get back to the games on that list, I would just like to say that I think you should finish the human-based games first. I think there's already enough animal makers, and though other people might disagree, I just think that the actual dress up games are more fun. Just throwing it out there that I think you should get the humanmakers done first, thanks for making us such great games!
Well there are a lot of animal makers but there are lots of human makers too. =-) I think Ola should finish games in what ever order is convenient. For example, when the Angel Maker was made it only took a few days becasue all the art was already done and Ola had a spare moment.
