Hogwarts Final Version

As many of you noticed, I uploaded the final Hogwarts Couples dress up game.

I'm having a lot of "oops" moments, since there are some things I meant to add because they were very popular (ie. snake, voldy nose etc.), but I just got lost in my notes and exhausted.

But YES, there is still one more film, so for that I'll re-open suggestions, as well as add multiple-character options. Thank you everyone for the awesome suggestions and very honest feed-back!

*scurries back to work on Avatar*

  1. Oh, I love your Bellatrix's hair!
I really like the deathly hallows necklace as well, though it could have possibly been a bit longer.
The game's icon looks tons better now.

  2. I've only seen like the first 20mn of the first move cus my best friend fell asleep! But even though I know NOTHING about Harry Potter I really like the game (thumbs up!).

    :D

  3. I absolutely love the cute baby dragons
    and ofcourse the bellatrix hairstyle,
the game is just so awsome

  4. Hey OLa, I love the game! I also have a flash question, I'm making a dress up game (using next and previous buttons) and I was wondering how I'd go about making hairstyles on multiple layers, like the bangs on top of the body, and the back behind the doll. I looked for it online, but couldn't find anything, I figured I could ask you.
    Love the game!

  5. Very good, and I'm glad you'll be adding more once the next movie comes out. Cause I just got more ideas! XD More tatoos would be the best thing you could add. Like I suggested, maybe having a click-and-drag option for tatoos, pets and stickers (that would be fun ;D) I don't actually care for the avatar maker, because I haven't watched the movie and have no desire to... But I'm sure a lot of other peoples are excited for it. ^_^
Oh and for the people who think the guy looks anorexic: he's not too bad, and you know what? If OLa changed his body, she would have to change all of his clothes! And who wants to re-draw all of that? Not me, and probably not OLa. :P

  6. AAHHH!!! TEH BABI DRAGON SO KAWAII!!! XD *ahem* Sorry, that's my inner fangirl coming out. :3 Anyway... I lurve the new additions! :D The ponytail on the guy is great, and the 'Trix hair!! I love it!!! XD

    ReplyDelete
  7. Another thing: I totally lol'ed when I saw how incredibly emo Harry looks in the preview picture! So life-like! :P

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think the updates are all lovely. And while there might be a few things I wish you'd added this round... well, part two's coming out in July. Only 8 more months... *starts countdown*

  9. I love the Bellatrix-hair. 8D I SO have to show my best friend this - we're both fans, but she's obsessively in love with Harry Potter, and I bet she'd like this game - especially since she could make herself and Harry Potter xD D'aww, the baby dragon is so cute. ^^ I just wish there was a snake D:

    ReplyDelete
  10. Haha, here here! I definitely don't want to re-draw clothes lol. And I find it funny that I've gotten so many "guy is anorexic" comments when I don't think he is.. the girl on the other hand O_o I mean, guys are slimmer on average and I think she's slimmer than him in the game? Nay?

To separate the hair, you have to have two separate movieclips on different layers, labelled logically, and make sure the code on the button refers to both of them at the same time ~

    ReplyDelete
  11. Thanks, I ended up just doing the hair all on one layer, I get impatient, but I'll remember that for my next game! I'm finally starting to understand Flash! And I must say, coding is a pain in the butt! I'll post a link here when I finish it!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I finished the game! http://larissa-art.deviantart.com/#/d33oifo
It's small, but I like it, I powered through it all day.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I know this has nothing to do with this forum, but can you make a Megamind and Roxanne dress up? You could give them cool leather costumes and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love the harry potter couple maker!! The baby dragons on it are so cute, as well as the little pink puffball thing!! I'm really looking forward to the avatar scene maker as well as the viking maker and princess maker!! Don't ever stop, you make beautiful games :)

  15. This is so random...

    But...

Black hair with purple streaks and red tips? And some super goffic clothing?

If you do this, I will love you forever... XD

Quality, quality work as always. I love your dressups :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Absolutely stunning work, as always. You're a real star, Madam OLa! I do have a suggestion, but you don't have to go with it. I love that you have badges from the book; what a lovely little detail. Would it be possible to add Prefect and Head Boy/Girl badges as well. That would be fun. Once again, excellent job, as always!

    ReplyDelete
  17. have you ever thought of doing an assassin's creed dress up it would be sssssssssoooooo cool if you did!!!!!! lookie at the trailers their really cool!!!!

  21. I'm pretty sure that if OLa made a My Immortal dressup, she would be declared the Queen of the Internet.

    ReplyDelete
  22. OH MY GOD!!! You did Bellatrix's hair!!! I love it!! Thank you. *hugs half to death* I can now make illustrations for my fanfic!! Yesh!! *air punch*

Well, you can always add stuff to the game as and when you please. =-D

  23. The game is fantastic!!! I really love it!!

And... what about a male avatar maker? XD

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love the Hogwarts Couple Game!! I could play it forever cause im a huge Potter fan!! I have a suggestion though... you should make it so that the couple can be from different houses, like the boy a Slytherin and the girl from another house and etc. but other then that the game is AWESOME!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Just throwing this out there:
I second/third/fourth/whatever is is at this point the My Immortal Idea.

    My Immortal? Assassin's Creed?
DO EET and you are the official Dictator of the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'd really like to see black combat boot type shoes for both genders, especially because the guy's jeans kinda look funny with the shoe options.

    ReplyDelete
  29. for the avatar game do you think you could add a freckles button. i'm sure somebody in the avatar world has them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dictator is too weak. If she made just a My Immortal dressup, she would be Supreme Ruler of all that is Internet. I'd say that even 4chan might like her, but I don't know if that is a good thing...

But seriously. Everyone who has ever read that story would be so in love, I can't even begin to imagine what kind of things might happen.

    ReplyDelete
  31. lol, i just spent an hour researching all that stuff. i lasted about a fifth through My Immortal. I think I get the idea.. black with pink... corsets.. fishnets XD
I could swing a bit of that next round.. remind me in the summer!

i would try playing assassin's creed if it didn't look like a game about constant killing. those really bore me lol. probably would make a good dress up though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ^ The TV Tropes page for My Immortal is much more informative than the actual story.

Well, it'll give you less brain damage.

  33. my favourites cahrarters are malik and learndo da vinci of assassin's creed men with one arm are sexy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I found that reading it out loud and pronouncing everything as it is spelled helped to keep my brain from melting.

Oh god, I want to put all of my favorite lines in here, but I don't want to scar anyone for life.

    ReplyDelete
  35. at least if 4chan liked her she wouldn't have to worry about the consequences of them NOT liking her. that could be dangerous. but at least Enoby's wardrobe is fairly straightforward: leather, fishnets, corsets, and lots and LOTS of eyeliner. and blood. and anything satanic. although, putting her in a polo shirt and chinos would be sort of fantastic....

    ReplyDelete
  36. a question about the avatar game: i was looking through alisa christopher's wardrobes for each character, and I saw that she had 'child' versions for most of the characters. i understand if you don't want to make full dress-up components for that little of material, but could there be an option to place the kid-versions of the characters in the scenes, like background characters or something?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh god a My Immortal game would be amazing. I love Enoby. And Vampire Potter. It's honestly my favourite story ever ♥

    ~Ali

    ReplyDelete
  38. Could do with the child versions. Are you picturing using them as those exact characters, or background figures, or OC's?

    ReplyDelete
  39. um... mostly as OCs, but a combination of all three, really. I just liked the idea that if I wanted to make a couple, I could throw in a kid or two and turn it into a full family. if we could customize and edit them like the other characters... that would be kind of epic. just being able to put the same characters into a scene, though, would still be pretty awesome. i understand if that's way too much work, though. you already have enough on your plate with all the older versions.

(and, I just have to comment: little!Sokka is freaking adorable with his face painted XP)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well I definitely see the appeal of the idea. Nothing puts the icing on the OC cake like breeding them lol. A choice of skin/hair colours and one outfit for each nation would probably be needed. I'll see how exhausted I get hahaha

  42. I love you'r games!! Their beautifly done with detail and care!! I was wondering, though, if their was a way to save them onto my own computer. see, my parents and i often go on road trips, where i don't have internet. If their was a way for me to save them onto my owm laptop then i could bring them with me so i won't get bored. please wright back!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. You can actually. Under the game where it says "play in fullscreen mode", RIGHT click on that link and press "save link/target as" and you'll be able to save the file. It won't work for every game though. Otherwise you can to view the code for the page and find the link to the game and save from there (right click etc.).

    ReplyDelete
  44. Are we going to be able to remove characters from the scene in The Last Airbender scene maker? 'Cause otherwise it'll be very cluttered and anoying if you only want to dress up one or two characters.

    Not that they're not fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  45. 'um... mostly as OCs, but a combination of all three, really. I just liked the idea that if I wanted to make a couple, I could throw in a kid or two and turn it into a full family.' That would actually be quite cool. But idk about doing it on the Avatar maker as I'm not interested in that show.... I can't really be a valid critic if I don't watch it!! XD

I love the Hogwarts Couple Maker. I'm doing all of my characters from my own original story with it because you can do both boys and girls and it has the best artwork!! =-D You're an amazing artist!! I would love more varity though which is why I can't wait for the next HP film (even though I hate the HP films XD)so you can add to it!! I made also made a cover for my fanfic with the AMAZING Bellatrix hair!! I left a link to it on your DA page.

  46. your avatar game is great i love how you updated it with zuko,i see there are a few items thats missing from him i hope you add them and fix the bug when you put tops with long sleaves that get hidden when you put on a skirt or pants, other than that every thing fine ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah, this is all really good. I love the bellatrix hair.

PS- Jess, this is Ivy, Come to my blog, I miss you and forgive you. It's a different link though, so You'll have to go through my profile

oh hi hmm,the one pj top and the robe he wore when he had long hair

the bug is when you put on a top with any long sleeves gets hidden when you put on a long skirt ,example the skirt with the flowers and the top that shows cleavage, sorry if i cant be more helpful

    ReplyDelete
  51. ah, i spotted something else that's missing: the tops that Zuko's shown wearing for 305.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm lost now. I know NOTHING about Avatar The Airbender.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think you should do create your own twilight character next

    ReplyDelete
  54. ^Seconded to the 2303974382764328th power.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree with the two posts before me infinite times over.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Agreed will everyone here ^ A million times agreed.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I for one am glad that we all agree that Twilight is a load of..... poop.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Poop is. . . not exactly the word I would use.

    ReplyDelete
  59. my question is, what's the POINT of a twilight-specific character maker. Is there anything.. intrinsically unique about a Twilight character as opposed to any normal person? Not really, except for the fact that some of the sparkle. Just use any of the billions of character makers out there and call whatever you make a Twilight character. It's just as affective.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I feel that for the people that like twilight, that maybe Ola could make it to where you could create them in the games like in the hogwarts maker or some sort. I like the books, but the movies are so Brainwashing, and I personally cant stand Robert P. or Kristen S., but thats my opinion, you guys are free to feel how you want <3

    ReplyDelete
  61. for the avatar game do you think that you could add animals to the backround or perched on their shoulders that would be super cool.

    ReplyDelete
  62. PEOPLE!STOP BEING MEAN TO TWILIGHT SOME PEOPLE LIKE IT!:(

    ReplyDelete
  63. @Anon above: people aren't being mean to twilight, they just say what they think. You can't be mean to something, only to someone. They're not saying no one should like it, so stop shouting.

Personally, I agree that it is kinda useless to make a twilight maker. OLa already made an awesome vampire maker, and she has so many projects that she has to finish! Adding this one to the list is just a waste of time... Not that I don't think OLa wouldn't make a wonderful Twilightmaker;)

PS: love the HP-maker, just wished you had added robes for the guy;)

    ReplyDelete
  64. ooh i just thought of this what about a narnia scene creator

    ReplyDelete
  65. I completely agree with Flower. :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I completely agree with Julie and Flower. I have no problem with people liking Twilight as long as they don't bash me for seeing it for what it really is. I read a TINY bit online recently and my brain completely died. NEVER AGAIN.

I don't exactly like Harry Potter to be truly honest but I think it's a fun thing to mess around with and I love the fandom. It's JK Rowling's OFFICIAL stuff I don't like. XD

@ Larissa: Me neither but I didn't want to say anything worse on Ola's blog as I know younger people use DD.

    ReplyDelete
  67. You really should think about doing a totally fantastic Septimus Heap game ooh! and a bear maker! But anyway, the HP game is AWESOME! Just 1 thing. You should be able to change the house cloak colors, all I'v seen are Gryffindor

    ReplyDelete
  68. @ Fawny: You can, just click re-sort in the boy's panels to change his colours and re-sort in the girls panels to change her colours.

    *******

Anyways, just gotta say I am SO EXCITED FOR LOLITA!!!!! I can't wait! The art looks amazing! I just saw the status bar and it looks like it'll be done soon! Also, liking the look of Candyland!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Just stopping by to say I'm loving the Lolita maker already!

Also, if you had a Homestuck troll creator I would love you forever. Just a thought <3

    ReplyDelete
  70. I agree, a Twilight Maker would be useless. Do I use the HP couple maker? No, but it projects characters and ideas that are unique and specific. It's easy to create Bella or Edward in a regular character maker, because they have no extremely unique styles.

P.S.- Remember, some people play dress-up games to have fun and experiment (ex. Lolita or Centaur maker), not to greate fan-fic characters.

I say continue to other projects, Ola. I always look forward to your unique games. I honestly go here first when I'm at my computer!

    ReplyDelete
  71. @ Anon above me: I use the HP couple maker to create my own characters but they're not from any sort of fandom, they're just magical folk meaning and that game has the right sort of style for both clothes and props. Plus it is fantastically drawn. In other words, I agree with you. The HP maker is basically a magical world maker, you can make the dolls have absolutely nothing to do with HP by not including the common room backgrounds and such. A Twilight maker is just the same as an ordinary doll-maker but with sparkles. And there is a vampire maker on the site which you can use to create fabulous NON-SPARKELY vampires.

    ReplyDelete
  72. i love your games your such an awesome designer! keep it up! :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. hmmm hair hair hair thats what i'd like :) and mabye some more pets or backgrounds :)

  74. Wow, the short girl hair and the long boy hairstyles are just awesome! I think I love this game most.

    ReplyDelete
  75. when do you think you'll be done with the last airbender scene creator im really exited for that

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hi love the games you make. could you please make a ninja maker please. it would be an awsome addition to your great site.

    ReplyDelete
  77. ^ Why/how?
Don't ninjas tend to have covered faces?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Personally, I can't wait for the dragon maker. :) So far, all the DollDivine games have not fallen short of my expectations. Awesome job.

    -v

    ReplyDelete
  79. I cant wait for the dragon maker too. Could you possibally finish the hose one before the hollidays or atla?

    ReplyDelete
  80. I've always felt like mai and zuko weren't gonna work out...and that the show was missing a more crazy, sarcastic ,and sneaky (contemporary)character female. You know between good and bad...perfect for Zuko. Some one who didn't really have a cool girl, goth,or tomboy title.Oh,someone who frustrates Katara ,and who BF's Sokka. Has a secret handshake with Toph, and kicks Aang out of the way before he falls in a vat of boiling cheese...so he doesn't have to use his air powers in public...lol. LOVE THE scene maker,I'll be using it over and over I can barely wait for you to finish it I'm dying here. I wanna come over and help you finish it.... hurry please love your site!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. so basically the show was missing a mary sue?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Second the poster above.

    ReplyDelete
  83. No,not exactly what I was saying... I meant all ,or a lot of animation ,and other television show characters fall under a certain stereotypical title..I love Avatar the last air bender, but it's characters (though highly loved)fall under stereo types. That's good, because the characters are not human they don't have many surprises in their personalities, and really have pretty predictable attitudes, and conversations. I wasn't talking about an all around perfect (Mary-sue) character,I was talking about a slightly original, unpredictable, and a extra dynamic that challenges the original base of the group. I love the group just how it is. I just have thought it would have been if not refreshing, different to have a highly relateable, normal, fun female character. Not to dreary, mean,or too happy ,or too feminine,or boyish (modern and realistic). This though will never happen (for good reason) It takes away the simplicity ,and fun from the show. It was just a blurty comment.

    ReplyDelete
  84. It's not like a "highly relateable, normal, fun female character" wouldn't fall under some sort of stereotype. Everyone does, and while they have stereotypes in the show, they always have explanations and backstories that explain them.
    For example:

Mai became "too dreary" way because she was always brought up to not speak unless spoken to and hide her emotions from those around her.

Ty Lee had six identical sisters, and became "too happy". She joined the circus because she wanted to be original and be able to stand out from the rest, so that's why she's always looking for attention.

Katara had motherly duties thrust upon her when she was eight, since her mom was killed then, so of course she acts motherly. I wouldn't say that she acts "too feminine", though.

Toph was brought up to always act ladylike, and is now trying to defy her parents in any way possible. She acts "boyish" because she is overcompensating for the twelve years where they had complete control over her life.

I left out Azula because she's very complex and we don't see much of her backstory, but I'm sure that the reason she's so evil is because of Ozai.

Personally, I find every character to have at least one relatable characteristic in them. Also, I don't see what this character would have to offer the show. I highly doubt the character you are talking about would be original or unpredictable.

I am aware I just wrote an essay - I am very bored and didn't have anything else to do...

    ReplyDelete
  85. The character that you're describing--original, unpredictable, and dynamtic--is already in the series. Suki. She's not a main character, and if she were, she'd probably be a Mary Sue. But as a side character, she works well; she's independent and strong. In your first post, you say that 'her BF's Sokka', which, again, is true. Of course, she's not 'perfect for Zuko', which in itself is an annoying statement. No one is perfect for anyone, that's what makes the characters human. For example, while everyone was fairly certain Aang and Katara would get together, she was hesitant at first; after Yue, we had no idea who Sokka would be with; Zuko and Mai works, however, as they both are struggling against their families, and their cold exteriors work nicely. Actually, "Maiko" or whatever they call it is the only canon pairing I completely support.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I'm dying for the Star Trek maker, but instead I see an icon for Candyland. :(

    ReplyDelete
  87. Wow, loads of comments about the OC, I thought this was about the dress up games...I can't wait until Ola's done with all of the charcters. I really would love to see Toph,Mai and Sokka makers. They're my favourite characters just because they have the most original personalities in the show. They also have the best outfits....

    ReplyDelete
  88. @ Anonymous: I can't really comment on the things you've said about Airbender as I do not watch the show, however, I would like to point out that not everyone falls under a stereotype. We are all different and unique and that's what makes the world interesting. A stereotype would be a character or person who didn't stand out as a complete individual and seems similar to several existing characters and/or people. From what you have said about the Airbender characters, I do not think they are stereotypes. They seem to be fairly original to me.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I agree with Jessamine. :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hey...can't wait for you to finish Ola! love your dress ups...man I've been checking everyday for the avatar one to finish the bars haven't moved an inch though.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I like your view Jess, but unfortunately EVERYONE falls under a stereotype. It most likely doesn't apply, but they can still give you a label and make assumptions from it. For example, I am a teenage female Canadian who reads manga and was homeschooled. So obviously I must be a boy, texting, hockey obsessed fangirl who is completely naive about the real world because she grew up so absolutely sheltered with her crazy-religious parents. NONE of that is true AT ALL of course, (well, maybe the fangirl bit a little... ^^;) but because of stereotyping people will make those assumptions. Stereotyping isn't if you actually act like the stereotype, it's if you fall under said stereotype, and I guarantee you that you fall under at least a dozen. It's a sad but true fact of life. All you can do about it is try and prove to people that the stereotype isn't true. Some people will still stick to their stereotyping like a religion, but those are the people who don't matter, I assure you.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Wow. A teacher could probably write a textbook on all these philisophical and sterotypical stuff. I can't wait for ATLA!!!

    ReplyDelete
  93. your argument is good, literatechick, except i think what this argument comes down to isn't "stereotypes" but "archetypes." archetypes range from anything from the 'mother type' to the 'anti-hero' to 'the hermit.' any character from ANY media, be it a novel, a tv show, or even manga, is modeled after a general archetype.

and this isn't necessarily a bad thing. archetypes exist for a reason, and it's because certain 'formulas,' so to speak, have been proven very successful when it comes to writing. take, for example, the 'five man band.' (and, more especially, i suggest you read up on it at tvtropes.) a five man band includes: 'the hero,' 'the lancer', 'the smart guy,' 'the big guy,' and 'the chick.' all of which are archetypes. all of which have been proven, time and again. to work well as foils to one another. and with very little thought, one can assign a member of the main group in Avatar to each of these positions.

to kind of quote the wiki article on the subject, two characters which fall under the same archetype can have completely different and original personalities. here's an example: both molly weasley and katara could be considered the 'mother type,' but these two characters are extremely different and unique.
archetypes AREN'T A BAD THING. problems come, though, when you want to judge a character who falls under a certain archetype by characteristics displayed by another character who falls under that archetype, even though these to characters have very little, if not nothing, in common.

and sorry if i got a little carried away there.

    ReplyDelete
  94. @ LiterateChick: A stereotype is a commonly held popular belief about specific social groups or types of individuals, for example, the tomboy, a girl who has tomboyish interests despite seemingly hating actual boys. I see this as a stereotype, but also as a 2-dimensional character. The reason I see it as a stereotype is because there are a hell of a lot of girls like that in the media so is therefore a group, such as stereotypes and cliques, neither of which I believe in. It is more like a 2D character because it is a person with no deep personality. According to Wikipedia stereotypes are based upon assumptions. As I see it you are not a stereotype unless you actually fit in with these assumptions. And where you say that 'I am a teenage female Canadian who reads manga and was homeschooled. So obviously I must be a boy, texting, hockey obsessed fangirl who is completely naive about the real world because she grew up so absolutely sheltered with her crazy-religious parents.' I HAVE seen this but I always thought it was plain stupid. I've always seen stereotypes as another form of cliques and/or 2D characters. *shrugs.

  95. @ Anon: We are having a highly educational debate and our teachers and parents would fully approve because we aren't going round getting wasted and killing people like most teenages do.

@ Kate: I see what you mean but personally I believe that everyone is different. Assuming by 'archtypes' you mean the 'role' of the character. Obviously characters who share a role won't be alike to each other, but will share the role in their story. For example, I have a character who has the same role in my stories as Sunny Baudelaie has in the Lemony Snicket books and the two are very different.
A 2-D character whould be, for example, Hermione Granger. Smart, likes to read, enjoys school, nothing really unique or special about her. A not-really-a-character character would be Bella Swan from Twilight who doesn't appear to have any sort of personslity at all.

    ReplyDelete
  96. @ Jessamine: an archetype goes beyond a role, but in a way is similar. i can't really find a good, concise way of explaining the fine differences between the two without tracking down the research paper i wrote a few years back on the subject. but they are a similar idea. the main difference is that while a role is purely the part a character plays, the archetype in some ways tie into the personality of the character... depending on what archetype you're talking about. sometimes, a character fits more than one archetypes.
sokka, for example, could be considered both 'the smart guy' and 'the big guy,' depending on the situation, as well as a 'ditzy Genius,' just to name a few more.

a 2-d character and an archetype are completely unrelated. almost any character in anything is archetypical. that character may also be 2-d. but they may not be.

i would argue, however, that Hermione is NOT 2-d. the fact that you see development and growth in her personality from being someone who was a stickler for authority (her infamous "or worse, expelled" comment as an example) to someone who is essentially willing to help lead the resistance is a great example of character development.

2-d refers to a character who is exactly what they appear on the surface and they NEVER change. think a minor character who's only roll is to serve someone coffee at a cafe.

bella swan IS a 2-d character. most characters from twilight could be considered 2-d because there is NO character development in those books.

bella is also an example of an author 'self insert.' eragon could also be considered a 'self insert.' author 'self inserts' also have a bad habit of being mary-sues.

mostly, what i was going back to was the original anonymous's comment about how each character falls under a stereotypical title. i think her arguments were based off of a misunderstanding of what a sterotype is vs what an archetype is. the fact that the characters of avatar are very similar to the types of characters found in other shows is not because they're based on stereotypes; they are based on archetyeps. or certain roles, if you will. and even the 'original' character she was arguing needed to be added to the group fills a certain archetype. the five-man band i mentioned above? that sometimes includes something called a "guest star party member," which is essentually the role that procupineweirdo argued Suki fills; which she does.

  97. I think this is the most comments Ola has gotten. LoL :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. @ Kate: I get what you're saying but a 2-D character is a character that isn't very developed and doesn't really have much about them. A good character is complex and 3-D.
In my personal opinion, Hermione IS an extremely boring 3-D character HOW JK ROWLING INTERPRETS HER. I have read fanfiction where Hermione is a stronger character than the one JK Rowling created. I will get flamed for this but I think all of JK's characters lack in development and her writing isn't half as good as people make out. One of the main reasons I belive her books get so much attention is because she has got lots of young boys reading and young boys don't paticularly like to read. Why do boys like HP? Because it's lacks in character development, which boys tend to find boring and has a lot of action and fighting scenes and also a lot of dead people. I'm not saying all boys are like this but a majority of them are.

JK Rowling hasn't written anything before HP and she hasn't written anything since either (except the Beadle & The Bard thing which doesn't really count since it is a spin-off of HP) if she was such a brilliant writer then Harry Potter wouldn't be the only thing she was famous for. Personally I think Harry Potter is over-rated. I think JK herself is a very funny lady (I read her website) and I agree with many of her opinions but her stories are dull and boring and I don't like them. I do however, like Harry Potter fandom and I get a lot more enjoyment out of the fandom than the official stuff.

As for Bella, to quote my favourite anti-Twilight article: ' Her appearance isn't described in detail; that way, any female can slip into it and easily fantasize about being this person. I read 400 pages of that book and barely had any idea of what the main character looked like; as far as I was concerned she was a giant Lego brick. Appearance aside, her personality is portrayed as insecure, fumbling, and awkward - a combination anyone who ever went through puberty can relate to. By creating this "empty shell," the character becomes less of a person and more of something a female reader can put on and wear. Because I forgot her name.'

I respect your opinion but I also hope that you respect mine as I stand by it. This is what I think. I am not telling you or anyone else that it is wrong to disagree with me, but my opinion isn't wrong either. We are all entitled to think what we like and personally I DO see JK Rowlings characters as 2-D.

What you say about archtypes is interesting but I still don't really understand as I don't watch Avatar and have no knowledge of the show so therefore when you reffer to the characters as 'archtypes' I haven't a clue what you're on about. I think this is an interesting concept though.

Just to clarify in general though, I am not trying to start or get involved in an arguement. As a writer I find this sort of thing interesting to talk about so please don't take offence at my comments.

I really should start my own blog insteed of filling Ola's with all my rubbish, but then those cyber bullies might find me....

  99. dont you guy's think your a little over board with the five paragraph comments?

    ReplyDelete
  100. Jess, I don't agree with you on Harry Potter. I don't know if you ever heard of Vergilius, but he was a famous roman author. He kinda rewrit the story of the Odyssee with Aeneas, but in such an amazing way, with alliteration, enallages, and all sorts of other stuff. He enclosed so many different parts of the old story, but also parts of his own life, like links with Augustus, the emperor.

J.K. is something like that. She wrote this amazing story, with so many reallife parts. Like the basilisks, which is a real mythological creature (as goes for the giants, centaurs, leprechauns etc.). But she also came up with these amazing creatures that are either less known or completely new, like thestrals and blast-ended skrewts.
She developed a whole ministry of magic, three magical schools (Hogwarts, Durmstrang and Beauxbatons), she thought of dozens of plants, potions, and, last but not least: spells. The spells she thought of, almost all of them come from Latin. And not just any latin that anyone with a dictionary can come up with, but with spells that are actually correct, according to that acient grammar.
Example: expecto patronum, which means: I expect a patronus, a guardian. Now someone with a dictionary would do this: expectare patronus, perhaps expecto patronus. But (replace patronus by he to make it clear): I expect he. Expecto patronum would be: I expect him, which is right according to grammar.

Right, you probably don't follow that, but please, just believe me: when you had Latin at school, it is just awesome to find so much of mythology and language here.

In addition to that: the story is just awesome. Every plot fits together, all the threads woven into a beautiful carpet.
I won't say that the generall idea is new: the hero who has to fight the bad guy (this comes literally back, he HAS to) is the oldest story in the world. But so was the story of Vergilius. That doesn't mean though that his work wasn't a masterpiece.

Hmm, it might be a good idea for me to stop writing now...

One last thing though: it's sorta unfair to say that J.K. isn't a brilliant writer because she only wrote HP yet, cause she did wrote 7 books, which would leave her not much time to write anything else.

Well, that was it for nowXD

PS: Ola, give us an update! A hundred comments is waaaayyy to much scrolling down... especially since we're making them so long...:P

  101. Jeez I didn't mean for one stupid 3 am comment of mine to turn in to five paragraph debates...whoopsies... I agree with Kate ,and the archetype thing...that's what i was trying to say.My names Kate too lol. Ola you really should check out this stinking page it's getting way to full. lol. Love the debates guys. I don't think a character that is well loved has to be well created ,or thought through. When you day dream ,or fanfic,or create an oc,or whatever you do. Does your character have fave food, address, fave color, fave book, movie, quote. Maybe a character is hollow so you can fill it up with your own personality without thinking about it,and vicariously live through them.mediocre character development,or genius way to keep ratings up?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Man we should start a debate group! I'll join!
    random-debate.com (calm,intelligent,mature people only)

    ReplyDelete
  103. @Anon: calm, intelligent AND mature guess that kicks me out of the debate group. ;-) lol

    ReplyDelete
  104. Wow, this debate is getting really. . . BIG. Seriously guys, it isn't that big of a deal, and really when you think about it, many characters start as stereotypes as well as archetypes, and then, as the story progresses, the character evolves into something completely different, almost as if they were an actual person. They become multi-faceted, and we see sides of them we didn't even no existed! A angry and bitter jerk can seem like the nicest person in the world to a little sibling, and someone who seems so calm and collected can lose it any time.

Sometimes stereotypes are good things, they give you a concept of the character, and you fill out who they REALLY are. Now of course if the character itself is a stereotype without a personality, that is not acceptable (unless of course this was the intent) but a good character should have many sides, like a real person.

I can't believe I put more effort into a comment on a blog than I do on most school assignments. . .

  105. OMG Ola again your work amazes me :) now this is kinda random but what do you think of a "Lion King" maker? like where you could make all the different lions from the movie or create your own with pridelander and outlander features and different markings? just an idea but if anyone could pull it off its you! ♥~SMP

  107. I love how this went from an OC Avatar character, to stereotypes, to archetypes, to Harry Potter. Very interesting how that developed. :P

@Jess: I see your point, but to me stereotypes aren't people who fit the generalized view of something, it's a label people stick to you so they can make assumptions without getting to know you at all. Also, the like two paragraph addition to your last post where you tried to deter flamers was not only annoying to read through, it was pointless. If someone really wanted to flame you they would have anyway, as most of the time people who do this think that their opinion is the only one that matters and anyone who thinks differently is, if I can quote my mothers favourite show, (dorky, I know) "not only wrong, but stupid." Instead of trying to deter flamers, just ignore them. They only want to start a fight, and why give any consideration to someone's opinion when they obviously don't care to see the argument from yours?

@Flower: I agree with you about Rowling, her characters and especially worlds are really quite unique. And just because she's only written seven books (if you don't count the accessory books, that would bring it up to nine I believe) doesn't reflect on her skills as an author. If the Harry Potter books are any indication, her next series of books will take immaculate planning, outlining and inventing. She worked something like two years to actually start writing Harry Potter after she came up with the idea because of all the extra planning she did. That's the kinda writer she is, a planner. It might take a while for her next book to come out, but if it's anything like HP it'll be worth the wait, at least for me.

@Whoever said that thing about Bella being a 2-D self insert/empty shell: (don't feel like scrolling up to check who it was exactly) Agreed. That's probably the best description of Bella ever given. :)

    ReplyDelete
  108. lol, I just posted that last comment, and teh interwebz wouldn't load the page at first because there were too many comments and it was like "ZOMG, TEH FILE 2 BIGZ!! D:" ^-^

    ReplyDelete
  109. Too add on to LiterateChick, JK Rowling might not want to write another series either - having to live up to Harry Potter would be nigh impossible, and she might not have gotten another idea like HP yet. Harper Lee didn't write anything after To Kill a Mockingbird because she had something so huge to contend with, and didn't want to disappoint. I wouldn't be surprised if JK Rowling felt similarly.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I wonder if we could get to 150 comments?

    ReplyDelete
  111. Anon above Julie: I heard somewhere that she's working on more books, but if she didn't I wouldn't be surprised, for precisely the reasons you pointed out.

  112. i think ola has dropped off the face of the earth or somthing she hasnt updated in almost a month.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Jin - she's moving house, and its christmas. Busy times for most.

    ReplyDelete
  114. @ Flower: Whatever. Each to their own. I don't think JK is a very good writer. I don't mind if you do, that's YOUR opinion. =-/ Point is, Harry Potter is over-rated, the characters are 2-D and the story is BORING. I know thousands of you will disagree with me and many will proberly want me to drop down dead now but that is what I think and nothing you say will change it. It's not a requirement to like Harry Potter.

@ LC: Yeah, it's annoying but I've been bullied online before and I don't want it happening again. But what I said stands. You shouldn't bully people just because their opinion is different to your own. And I felt like I needed to confirm that I wasn't trying to flame people that I was simply taking part of the discussion.

@ Rune: Poor Ola, must be stressful. She will FREAK OUT over these comments when she gets back. I just imagine her sitting there having to scroll through all this. I'd get fed up!

@ No-one in paticular: I feel this has got out of hand and I'm a little worried over it. I know I'm just being a drama queen but I really don't want there to be a fight and now I feel that you all hate me just because of my unique view and different opinions. This has been the case MANY times before. So I'm not going to comment again.

    ReplyDelete
  115. @Jessamine: I don't think any of us are angry with you. I mostly disagree with your opinions, but I think that you used them intelligently and backed them up well, and I respect that. From what I've seen, this looks to be more of a playful debate than a fight or whatnot. I certainly don't hate you for your opinions – you don't have to like Harry Potter, and it would be idiotic to think someone did.

    ReplyDelete
  116. That´s right, Jess. No one is angry with you. Perhaps a little annoyed sometimes, but hey, who cares about that? You gave your opinion and backed it up with good arguments. Well, good arguments for you. Cause that's also a matter of opion, what do you think is a good argument.

    ReplyDelete
  117. C'mon Jess, don't drop out! It's not out of hand, it's just getting interesting. It's not like we're shouting at each other through the computer, we're having an intelligent discussion. No one's gonna hate you for your opinion, and if they do, who needs 'em? You add an interesting dynamic to the discussion. It's much more fun to argue things then to simply agree with them. ^-^ We're just having a bit of fun, no need to be worried. Whoever you were bullied by before was obviously a jerk who didn't have anything better to do then be mean to people he didn't know because they thought differently then he did, which is possibly the most heinous thing anyone could do. I don't think that would happen here, and if anyone did try to bully you or anyone, I'm quite sure no one else would just stand by and let it happen. I know for sure I wouldn't.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Thanks for all three of the replies above. I just panic a little when things start to get a little heated. Anyways, I enjoy discussing things like that, as long as it doesn't turn into a fight. I just get freaked out and I'm sorry. *huggles to all*

  132. @ ah, i'm usually fine on skis, but the one time i tried snowboarding... er... yeah, it was possibly worse than that. i ploughed straight into one of those little-kid ski school things, and ran straight into the instructor. i somehow came out unscathed, but he ended up with a broken wrist.

  147. @ LC: Strangely enough, we all have much better and more productive things that we can and should be doing rather than this. We obviously just can't be bothered and/or would rather be doing this.

Btw, what happened to our debate? Sorry aagain for getting a bit panicy but it was getting kinda good. Weird how it happened though. Let's debate on what colour the sky is! Or try and think of ten games we can play with a giant rock.

    ReplyDelete
  148. hahaha, yes i did have to sit here and read all of this LOL XD

Did u guys see JK's interview on Oprah?

I actually agree that JK isn't some sort of amazing author. But I personally feel about her like I do about music.. I don't need it to be of top-most quality, as long as it takes me somewhere I want to be.. and my word, do I ever want to be at Hogwarts O_O

    ReplyDelete
  149. XD Sorry 'bout all the spam Ola. LOL.

Yeah, like I said, I enjoy the HP fandom and I think it is great how it has inspired people. It's even inspired me a bit. To make sure my wizards are better! XD =-P

  150. @Jess: I know we all have a lot of stuff we should probably be doing other then spamming OLa's blog (yeah... sorry 'bout that... :D) and yet we're still doing it. I guess that means we're more procrastinators then have nothing to do, but still. I didn't mean to be mean, I was just teasing. Don't take it so personally! ^-^

I don't know what happened to the debate, it sort of... petered out. :( I agree, it was just getting interesting to...
